“You have reached your goal!”
With its own pharmaceutical products and as contract manufacturer, Fresenius Kabi Austria is well positioned on the market. It’s a novelty, however, that the company domiciled in Graz now also produces prefilled syringes. Christian Krenn (Head of Production Unit Emulsions at the facilities in Graz) reports on the successful launch of this new segment.
What are your general requirements to packaging processes and a packaging line?
Cost and quality leadership are primary aspects. Of course, a good degree of automation is also very important, as well as experience. Know-how of our employees at the product line and in the laboratories is an additional decisive aspect. Ultimately, we expect from our packaging lines what we demand from ourselves: Absolute reliability and a high degree of flexibility.
What were the primary considerations for this filling and packaging machine project? And did you encounter any particular obstacles?
Filling prefilled syringes is our most recent packaging technology – and a central step within our strategic orientation. Frame conditions for the task, however, were not conclusively defined before the project began. Thus, the line was not designed for any specific product. Consequently, the great challenge consisted in setting up a line with the capacity to meet a broad spectrum of specific requirements and a high degree of flexibility. In addition, we tried to make the most efficient use of the space situation, which was undeniably fairly limited.
What were the criteria by which the order was ultimately assigned?
Criteria for assigning the job were the price, the company’s expertise in nest technology, customer orientation, and flexibility. Before coming to a final decision, we went out of our way to visit all potential suppliers and to gain insight into their assembly and manufacturing facilities. We also scrutinized references and organizational structures. Due to our rather distinctive requirements, customer orientation and flexibility were absolutely indispensable. We assigned the project to Optima, because we found that the company fulfilled these criteria best, plus we saw them consistently applied in all contacts. At the conclusion of the project, I am convinced that we made the right decision.
